Kids

I know lots of people have said it but it is SSOOO true....kids should come with a manuel. You know, an instruction book so "when all else fails, read the instructions!" :) I'm sure it's no big deal compared to what some people have to deal with or even what I have yet to look forward to as my young children grow up into teenagers and then young adults, but still.... My most recent parenting struggles have been with my daughter, a very strong-willed individual. When she doesn't want to do something (ie, eat what's on her plate, stop doing something when asked, ect), she won't! I know that I have to be firm and be consistent but , that's easier said than done, now where is that instruction manual?!?!? Also another thing that is very annoying is something my youngest has started. Everytime he's told "no" he can't have/do something, he esponded "You hate me!" and/or "I hate you!". I've tried explaining the meaning of the word hate and that'snot what he really means, I've also tried ignoring his comment so as not to give him the attention he may be seeking, but he still continues to do it!!! Now where is that manual?!?!?!? HELP!!!, what should I do? When I'm not around people say how good my kids are but when I'm present, they are totally different individuals.
I'm sure you may have already seen this video before but I still laugh when I see it. It's so true, how many of thse things that are parents said and we swore we'd never say that to our kids but now that WE are the parents, guess what we find ourselves saying?!

Summer 2009

Hi Everyone! Sorry i've been kinda MIA around the blogosphere this past couple of months. As the leaves are starting to turn color and fall off the trees and get ready for school to start, one might kind of argue "did we have a summer?!" Yes, yes we did, and a busy one at that. Here are some highlights of my summer. Just before the end of school in June, a friend of mine hosted her husband's 40th surprise birthday part. It was great fun, especially the demolition derby

Then shortly after the kids were done school I started picking up alot of shifts. For two different weeks the kids stayed with grandparents while Cliff & I were able to work the same shifts together. When they were home, we still worked but opposite shifts so that one would bring the kids to work and the other take them home again. My 0.2 (every other weekend) turned nto 0.8 - 1.0 AKA full-time (with overtime occasionally)

In July, I turned 36 and Cliff, the kids & I ventured on a road trip to Regina for 3 days. While there we visited the Saskatchewan Museum and Lego Exhibit that Wynn had his heart set on. We also went to Moose Jaw as it close and went on a tour of the Tunnels. Very well done and eye-opening to see how terribly we treated Chinese immigrants. Next time we go back, we are going to do the other tour re the gangs of Al Capone.

At the end of June we thought we'd be bringing our new Schizu-Bichon x puppy home but that was changed after she broke her leg. :( All July we kept contact with Cookie and her owner to see how she was doing and eager to bring her home. We finally got the ok the 1st week of August and were able to bring Cookie Oreo Ryden home on August 11, 2009. She has quickly become a part of our family. Granted a few things I thought i was done with, I'm NOT now. For example I was so happy when Liam finally didn't need pull-ups anymore and I no longer found puddles of pee on the floor. Now it's the whole potty training thing all over again. And childproofing/puppyproofing....baby gate is back by the stairs, can't leave anything you don't want chewed on the floor...

Speaking of Liam, he had a MIckey Mouse Clubhouse birthday party and turned 4 last month. My "baby" is now going to be going to "Kindergarten Here We Come" (preschool) this twice a week year. By next year when he starts kindergarten, I'll have all three kids in school full-time.

Also in August, the kids had two two week sessions of swimming lessons. All my kids are like fish and love being in the water. Just watching them is making me think I should take swimming lessons as the two older, especially one, can swim better than me by a long shot. Great thing about taking swimming lessons at the Y is NO MOSQUITOES!!!!! :)

This summer was very cold and wet (see here ). However we have been blessed with a beautiful September. we finally managed to take two family outings that had to cancelled earlier in the summer due to inclement weather. First, we went to Tinkertown, a family amusement park and second, we went fishing at Lockport the weekend before school was to start.

Both Autumn & Wynn have met there new teachers and classes and are enjoying being back at school. Liam will start in 2 days. He has grown up alot in the last year so I'm hoping that he will also enjoy the school experience and it won't be hard for either of us to part for the 2 1/2 hours. As we gear up for the new school year, we are busy getting the kids registered in their progrms. Wynn heard the call of the wild last spring and so has moved up from Beavers to Cubs (scouting). He has his new uniform and starts tomorrow. Autumn has decided to give up Rhythic Gymnastics this year and try Pee Wee Cheerleading. Not to mention their swimming lessons start again on Friday, which has been on break for the last two weeks. And then right after that is Autumn's 6th birthday party ....AHHHHH!, and I thought things were slowing down.....NOT!

Guess I better post this update (which I've been trying to work on for the last week. If I take too much longer I fear it will turn into the project my "Christmas" newsletter did that wasn't mailed until a month late. So much to look forward to and I'm hoping to be able to keep my blog (and you) updated. :)

PHEW!!

Hello everyone. The kids may be on vacation but I've been working more than I think I have for a long time. I'm at work right now counting down the minutes...only 1hour and 15 min to go before I'm finished my nineth shift of nine in a row. Hubby works for one week and then he is officially (and I am too) on vacation. On the 20th I turn 36 and then on the 21st we are off to Regina for our 3 day trip. I will tell you all about it when we get back.

Speaking about the kids, they were at their Grandparents' for a week and just got back yesterday. Nothing like not having your kids around to make you realize just how much you appreciate them AND THEIR NOISE. Sure while they were gone I'd clean up and it would stay clean but honestly I'll take their constant messes anytime over not having them around. I think my hubby put it best the first day they were away. He said, "sure I like it quiet but this is so quiet it's almost eerie!"

The kids went to visit Cookie, our puppy, while they were out there and say she was running around on her leg. The owner says we may be able to bring her home in a week or so. :D!!!! Not much else to tell you about but i'm sure in the next couple weeks I'll have lots of news. How is your summer going?

Last Day Of School

YAY!!!! It's "officially" the last day of school. I think "technically" school was already done a week ago as the kids have been bringing home all their paraphernalia for the last week+. Yesterday was a talent show and today is a Canada Day celebration where the kids are going to be parading around the neighborhood with Canadian and provincial flags. I'm sure the kids will be looking forward to Mom NOT coming in every morning to get them up & dressed and I personally will be looking forward to not having to make lunches every evening/morning. I know that the summer will go by fast and next fall I'll have three kids in school (2 full-time and Liam 2x/week. We don't have a lot planned for the summer but are planning on taking a 3 day family trip in July and daily swimming lessons in August. And as Mom & Dad work much of the summer the kids are also looking forward to spending some time out in the country with their grandparents and cousins. Have a great summer! Do you have anything special planned for this summer break?

First Day of Summer

Yay! It is officially summer...and it feels like it! :) For the past week the weather has been beautiful. Temps in the mid - high 20's. Yesterday I was even swimming in a friends pool and the water was nice and warm as opposed to what would have been a "polar bear swim" just a few weeks ago. This spring/summer 2009 has been crazy - it feels like we went straight from a winter that wouldn't end to summer! For example on the May long weekend this year it SNOWED!!! I was looking at my wedding photograghs from 9 years ago and I had to reming myself I also got married on the May long weekend but by looking at the pics and green grass you'd think it was June. Also this year, I didn't put my plants in till the first week of June this year as it was so cold in the mornings and overnight. Yet still, what happened....I lost several plants to frost that 1st week of June. Now my plants need regular watering as the are growing like crazy and by the end of the scorching days are wilting from the heat. But don't get me wrong...I am NOT complaining!!! After a 6 month cold streak that wouldn't seem to end, I'll gladly water my plants every evening and sweat in the heat and humidity before you'll hear me complaining!! Happy Summer 2009. Hope it is a great year.

Happy Father's Day

W Is For Westgrove

The kids had a book launch at school last week of a book the students of Westgrove elementary (my kids' school) wrote, illustrated and published. It (the project) started seven months ago when they had a guest author showing the new book he'd written about Manitoba titled 'G Is For Golden Boy'. This sparked an idea with the librarian and away they went on starting there own project. I attended the launch and it was very interesting, they showed a powerpoint presentation of the various stages of production. Each class making an alphabet list about their school, each class was assigned certain letters to make a poem about the final choice of word for each letter, also for each letter they were assigned they had to make an oil-like painting. With help from various people in the community including the author & illustrator of the 'G Is For Goldenboy' book, their book was published. The cover drawing was done by my son's class. Here I've scanned the letters of the alphabet for Westgrove School:

Busy, Busy, Busy

Too bad that when I "think about" writing on my blog it doesn't happen (telepathy ?). It's not that I haven't thought about writing on my blog but rather I just haven't had the time to spare to sit in front of my comp and henpeck on my keyboard. Up until just the last few days our weather has been unpredictable with snow and frost overnight and chilly days intermixed with some warmer days. Just the past couple of days I've been wearing shorts and sunscreen to avoid getting a sunburn as all I want to do is stay outside. Today I started planting my garden and Friday I'm looking forward to going to the greenhouses and getting my flowers. Needless to say I'm making my lists and checking them twice. :)

My kids are getting to the age wear I'm one of those moms I'd always hear about driving their kids everywhere. The bad thing is that only two of them are old enough for most activities...just I wait until it is all three!!.....I'm actually enjoying the fact that summer is approaching and so several things are winding up so I'm not out every night. Monday Wynn goes to Cubs, Tuesday Autumn has rhythmic gymnastics and Wynn soccer, Wed eves are now free :), Thurs Wynn has soccer and Friday all three kids have swimming lessons. This past Tuesday, rather than her regular gymnastics class Autumn had assessment as she is old enough to start competitive classes in the fall. She is WAYYY more flexible than I am or ever was...she can do (and enjoys) both side and middle splits.

This weekend we are going out to Cliff's parents place to visit them but also to visit our puppy that we are getting from a breeder out there. It is a Schitzu/ Bichon cross. The pups will be three weeks old this weekend. We will pick out our puppy and get to bring it home with us at the age of 7 weeks.....just before the end of school. It's hard to believe that the school year is almost over. June also holds many other exciting days - circus, church picnic, surprise birthday party for a friend, Autumn's Sparks sleepover... Hopefully I will get around to blogging about them. We have two weeks off in the summer and are trying to decide if when are going to drive out west the. Do you have any exciting plans now the warm weather is here?

Also as a note re exciting news....My Liam boy is wearing underpants and although he still has accidents, his doing VERY good about going pee & poop on the potty and even telling me when he has to go rather than mom trying to remember to take him to try every couple hours. He's quite proud of himself. I must admit I was getting worried as he'll be starting preschool in the fall and he was still in pull-ups.

Sorry not very exciting but I just wanted to let you know why I've been sluffing off here.

World Hypertension Day: May 17, 2009

I started this post 2 1/2 months ago when my husbund had a close call with his blood pressure. It was then that I found out about "Hypertension Day" and wanted to make sure other people were aware. Luckily it was just a "wake-up call" rather than a stroke. My husband has always known his blood pressure is borderline high and cardiac problems run in his family. He had pretty much accepted his daily migraines as a part of his daily schedule. But once he went to the dr with a blood pressure of 195/105 all that changed. After several visits to the dr, he was started on 3 cardiac medications, his blood pressure is now around 115/80 and I don't remember his last migraine headache. In addition to cutting down on his salt (sodium) intake, he's also drinking alot more water vs soda and atempting to be more active. Needless to say he's lost about 10 pounds and feeling great. Great as far as his blood pressure goes....

2009 Theme: Salt and High Blood Pressure. Two Silent Killers - Get Informed. Live Long

World Hypertension Day
World Hypertension Day has been established to highlight the preventable stroke, heart and kidney diseases caused by high blood pressure and to communicate to the public information on prevention, detection and treatment.
Each year, May 17th is designated World Hypertension Day. High Blood Pressure Is A Global Epidemic. Over 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure (or hypertension). Hypertension is the biggest risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
High blood pressure is the biggest single risk factor for death worldwide, causing strokes, heart attacks and kidney disease.
Salt Is A Major Factor In Raising Blood Pressure. High salt (sodium) consumption is the cause of hypertension in about 3 in 10 adults. Hypertension is the major risk factor in cardiovascular diseases, accounting for 64% of strokes and 49% of coronary heart disease. Reducing sodium
reduces blood pressure. Globally, 7 million die every year because of high blood pressure. Many of these deaths could be prevented by eating less sodium. Sodium is a part of table salt but up to
80% of the sodium we consume comes from processed or packaged food and food eaten at restaurants.

(if sodium added), coated chicken,
powdered sauces, noodle snacks, olives,
pickles, prawns, salami, salted nuts,
salted fish, sausages, smoked meat
and fish, soy sauce, stock cubes, table
sauces, canned meats.

Sodium More Than 400 Mg per Serving

YIELD Eat Fewer Servings
of Processed Foods.
Baked beans, cookies, breakfast cereals,
bread products, burgers, cakes, pastries,
cooking/table sauces, chips, stuffed/
canned pasta, meat pies, pasta sauces,
pizza, ready meals, soup, sandwiches

Sodium 200 - 400 Mg per Serving

cheese, fruits and vegetables (dried,
fresh, frozen) homemade bread/sauces/
soup, mozzarella and ricotta cheese,
pasta, rice, unsalted nuts, plain cottage
cheese, plain popcorn, yogurt, peas,
beans, lentils, seeds.

Sodium Less Than 200 Mg per Serving

Other Helpful Actions:
• Don’t put the salt shaker on the table.
• Try using fresh herbs and dried spices instead of salt.
• Try making your own sauces with less or no salt.

What actions can countries take to reduce salt intake?
It Is Vital That All Countries Reduce
Their Salt Intake.
• The average daily salt intake in worlwide is
approximately 9-12 grams per person.
• The World Health organization
recommends not more than
1 tea spoon of salt (5-6 grams
per day. New evidence
recommends daily intake of
only half a tea spoon of salt
(2-3 grams) per day and even
less for children.
• National salt reduction is the least costly way to
prevent cardiovascular disease.
If salt intake is reduced by half,
it would save approximately
2.5 million deaths a year from strokes
and heart attacks worldwide.
Salt Reduction Strategies Around the World
Developed Countries:
Most salt in the diet comes from processed, packaged,
restaurant, or fast foods.
• Engage with the food industry to reduce salt in
the manufacturing process
• Encourage governments to set voluntary salt
reduction targets
• Develop food labeling with salt
• Education Educate the public
about the danger of salt
Other Countries:
Most of the salt is added during
cooking or comes from sauces.
• Assess major sources of
salt in the diet
• Educate health authorities
and Government
• Educate the public about
the dangers of salt

What action can the average person take to reduce salt intake?
Cut The Salt And Lower Your Risk!
People who eat too much salt are more
likely to have high blood pressure,
resulting in heart attacks, stroke and
kidney diseases. But, the salt shaker is
not the biggest culprit! About 80% of
the sodium you eat is from processed,
packaged, restaurant and fast foods.
Check Food Labels
Before You Buy
To reduce your sodium intake, check
food labels for sodium content.
Choose foods that are low in sodium,
sodium-reduced. Try to avoid food with
20% or more of sodium per serving.
1 gram of salt contains
400 milligrams (mg) of sodium or
1 gram of sodium = 2.5 grams of Salt.
The current average daily sodium intake
is well over the recommended level
of 1 teaspoon or of 2,300 mg.
Try to use only half a tea spoon
of salt a day.
Control Your Blood Pressure:
• Measure your blood pressure regularly
at home.
• If your blood pressure is high see a health
care provider to get an assessment.
• If you are on treatment make sure to take
your medications regularly.

Unfortunately, now my husband is off work again but this time due to a back injury. He's seeing a physiotherapist regularly and returns back to work on light duties in a week. Poor guy is calling himself "Brad Pittiful". Yes there is a story behind that....both my husband and I work as RN's at the same place so one day when I picked up a shift on is unit that he is off sick for, one of the HCA's said "oh look, it's Mrs. Smith....in place of Mr. Smith who isn't here." My first thought was, "does that make me Angelina Jolie?!". I went home and called my husband "Brad Pitt"....thus his response :)

What's With This Weather?!?

If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it. Actually, I would...how pathetic is that...I do live in Manitoba after all! Just three days ago, the daytime high was +22*C, we were wearing shorts, and biking to school. Today, just three days later, IT'S SNOWING! and I had to bring my potted flowers inside. Thankfully it's not as much as Liam imagined when I said "It's snowing". He replied with glee, "I'm going to go make snow angels!" Hopefully you have to wait until next winter for that my boy, I want to see summer first!

This is what I saw when I looked out my window. Actually I'd already been up for about an hour and there isn't as much snow in these pics as I first saw when I woke up. This is a good thing I guess, means the temperature is warming up and melting the snow. :)

And to think that I scoffed at having to wait until the May long weekend to go to the greenhouse and start buying and planting flowers. The weather was so nice for a couple days I guess I had "spring fever". This is my reality check.

Here are our vehicles covered in snow. In the winter we keep the van in the garage but now the garage is full of bikes, spring toys and gardening stuff.....oops!
I don't think I posted a picture of our new car. The Echo beside the van, we purchased it in January of this year. So nice, I can't imagine how we did with only one vehicle or even how I did without a driver license for so long.
I hope you all are having a good spring!

Tales From The Laundry Room

It all started last week when my neighbors dryer apparently bought the biscuit and she asked if she'd be able to bring her wet washed clothes over and use my dryer.....SURE! I replied. Little did I know that on Friday while I was doing laundry, when I went down stairs to put my clothes in the dryer and start another load as this one should have be done for some time now. I lifted the lid on the washer to find a tub full of water and clothes. Oh no, did the button get pushed off....nope, is the dial stuck...nope, breaker blown....nope, I couldn't seem to find a simple solution. Seeing as how this was Friday evening and we wouldn't be able to get a repairman to come and look at it till after the weekend, we emptied the washer with a wet-dry vac. Can you imagine how that much standing water would stink after sitting for 3 days. Good thing my dryer still worked and I could dry these wet clothes sitting here. As I looked down at the days of laundry unable to wash any of it, two words came to mind - JOYCE, HELP! (that would be my neighbor). You can imagine with three young children and two nurses that wear a different uniform everyday and then change into street clothes after work that I need to do laundry about every other day. Well good thing we are good neighbors, for the next 5 days until out new appliances were delivered I used Joyce's washer and she'd use my dryer. :) We had figured that it was probably the pump that was gone on our washer and hopefully it could get fixed relatively inexpensively. Think again we were told, by the time we paid for someone to come out, look at it, and fix it, we might as well by a new one. So we did, we upgraded our top loading washer AND dryer (which was starting to make squeaky noises and we figured it's days were numbered) to a front loading pair...pretty! :)
washer

dryer

My laundry room is actually also the storage room/ utility room so I had to clean out the room of the boxes, totes and bookshelves with books so the delivery men could actually get the old ones out and the new ones in. As I look as the room now with everything out, it looks so roomy and so much more like a laundry room. As I was moving all this stuff out, there was alot of stuff I thought "why do we have/keep/or need this?" and definitely don't plan on moving it back downstairs. Having to move stuff is a good way of making yourself go through stuff and clean dust bunnies you never seem to get to. Here are a coupe pictures of the room and a close-up of the "laundry area" as it looks now. Just looking at it gives me visions of how to "finish" and decorate it. Also it reminds me of a conversation with a friend and gives me inspiration to put up some shelves, lay some mats/flooring and splash a bit of paint.

From One Extreme ToThe Other

YAY!! My blogger is working, finally. I wanted to blog about the last couple of days but it wasn't possible due to technical difficulties. !@#$%^&*(?!@ Anyway, the things I wanted to blog about are......
Last week was Spring Break here. My in-laws came into the city Friday for something else. We would all be going back out to the country (Eriksdale) for the weekend to celebrate my niece's birthday as soon as Cliff was done his last evening shift Friday night. Which meant we'd probably go out early Saturday morning so the kids would be there in time for 12:30 when the "kid's party" was to start. Rather, my in-laws took our van and all three kids back with them on Friday. They left Friday am and my husband left for work around 2:30pm so from then on till he arrived home after midnight, I had the whole quiet house to myself. S-I-L-E-N-C-E!!!!! I was able to sit uninterrupted at my computer and watch old episodes of ER, surf the 'net, facebook, and I WOULD HAVE blogged had my computer let me (GRRR!!!). I ate supper when I wanted, didn't have to watch the clock so I put little ones to bed on time. AND, I almost forgot, Hubby asked me to go get his mother something for her birthday so I was able to go shopping myself and not have to do up and undo three other seat belts. And I was able to go into a clothing store and walk around "just looking" till I found the right one and bought Grandma an outfit for her birthday. Then when Hubby did come home at around 12:30am, we didn't have to rush off to bed but rather made a snack and finally went to bed around 2:00am. Needless to say we slept in without being woken up, jumped on and have to watch/listen to Treehouse tv. Best of all, since we weren't in a hurry to get the kids to their party (the "family party" was Sunday at 12:30) we didn't have to hurry off and get a quick bite to eat. Rather after we rose from our leisurely sleepin we went out for brunch together. Basically we went out for a date just the two of us. I think it was almost supper time by the time we finally arrived in Eriksdale. As nice it it was, a day without the kids , it was also nice to see them again........or so I thought. SILLY ME! The rest of the weekend wasn't bad as we were visiting family and there were lots of other kids around, but once Monday morning came and back to the ole drawing board....AAHHH!!!!! I'm surprised I still have hair on my head and didn't pull it all out! :) Cliff was gone for work at 6:30am and it started when I had to get the kids up for school and never stopped till Hubby came home from work. He was greeted by my kicking something the kids had left out across the hall. OOPS, Sorry! I'm not sure why but as much as my kids Love me, I know they don't respect me or atleast they don't act like it. I was to the point of tears several times. I set limits, consequences, am firm but they never pay attention to me until Daddy is brought in. As I've been told, I shouldn't have to raise my voice rather I should just have to give them "the look" and they listen. What am I doing wrong? I love my kids but honestly sometimes they drive me CRAZY!!

More Parties

In nine days, March 31 - April 8, my family has 5 birthdays to celebrate. We had my son's birthday party yesterday. Normally I go all out and do a theme party but this year I just didn't have any ideas early enough to get organized PLUS I'm working night shifts this weekend so I'm in no condition to be hosting a bunch of people at my house. So this year we did something different and had a popcorn party at the movie theater.

The kids watched the movie Monsters vs Aliens. Click the movie title to check out the trailer if you haven't seen it yet. I got off work at 7:45 am. We (3 adults and 8 kids) met at the movie theater for 12:40pm. Had birthday cake and presents in a party room for the first hour then watched the movie in a reserved seating area with popcorn and drinks provided. After, my family and both sets of grandparents met us for supper at a truckstop restaurant and we had the buffet (my son's request). It was alot of fun and surprisingly enough I stayed awake and functional through most of the day :) and napped once we came home and before I had to go back for another night shift. Rather than the usual big birthday cake we bought one from the grocery bakery that they made out of cupcakes - great idea for kids!

Next weekend, we celebrate my niece's birthday who is actually 2 days after my son's. Although it will mostly be a celbration for my niece with the kids having a sleepover and family lunch/party the next day, we will also wish a happy birthday to my sister-in-law (whose birthday is the day after my niece) and my husband and his mother (who share a birthday). I'm going to try to post some pictures tomorrow once I get them downloaded from my camera.

Come Back Spring!

Spring, where is thy warmth and sweet smell?! Correct me if I'm wrong but this IS officially spring. I realize I'm in Winnipeg where winters can last and last and it's not always guaranteed that on May long weekend you'll be able to plant without the continued risk of frost. But still........... This winter has already been so long and bitterly cold that we've all had enough. Last week there were puddles everywhere, snow was melting and you could see grass and muddy gardens, kids were riding bikes......then THIS! I'm not sure of the exact amount of snow but over the last couple days I'm sure we have more snow now than the original amount that was here. And the winds and ice under the snow, it is treacherous outside. I just cleaned my driveway yesterday of all the ice and show so I could actually get up it with out getting stuck and now it looks like I never did it. Guess, I know what I'll be doing as soon as I'm done here. After watching my kids yesterday I'd say they are ready for spring/summer too (that's the only reason I can think of for them doing what they did). While my oldest son & I were cleaning the driveway, my 3 & 5 year old were on the front step on the bench with a blanket and pillows. That part's OK but later when I looked they had taken of their boots, jackets, AND socks. Despite telling then to get dressed or they will get cold they insisted they weren't cold and continued to dance around like it was the middle of June. Needless to say, in a while they were crying and calling "Mommy, I'm Cold...". We went inside and got warmed up and everyone was better. P-L-E-A-S-E come back Spring , we are SO ready for you! Winter, winter go away and come again another day (like next year!).

Purple Day

March is Epilepsy awareness month and as such I wanted to share about Purple Day. I myself have epilepsy which is controlled by medication. I have three children whom none of have epilepsy. When I was pregnant with my first child I was very concerned that I would pass this condition onto him. I did not. As I still don't understand the whole process and how this condition is passed onto our children, it is something I continue to research. My mom had epilepsy and had two children that now have it meanwhile she has "outgrown ?" the condition. And I have epilepsy and three children who do not...???... During one of my times surfing the net I found this article and want to share it with you:

A little bit about Purple Day...

Founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada, Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26, people from around the globe are asked to wear purple and spread the word about epilepsy.
Why? Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide. That's more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson's disease combined.
Why purple? Lavender is the international colour for epilepsy.
Getting involved is easy. Wear purple and encourage others to do the same. Host a Purple Day party or fundraising event at your home, school or business. And most importantly, get real facts about epilepsy by browsing this site and those of our partners.
Cassidy's Story
Hi, my name is Cassidy Megan. I’m nine years old and I have epilepsy. I started Purple Day because I wanted to tell everyone about epilepsy, especially that all seizures are not the same and that people with epilepsy are ordinary people just like everyone else. I also wanted kids with epilepsy to know that they are not alone.
Before I started Purple Day, I was afraid to tell people about my epilepsy because I thought they would make fun of me. After the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia did a presentation in my class, I started to talk with the other kids about my seizures. That is when I decided to become a spokesperson for kids with epilepsy.
When I’m not in school or working on Purple Day, I like to act. I have been in a couple of commercials and was the lead in a movie featured in the Atlantic Film Festival. I also like to play outdoors with my friends, take care of my four pets, go to Girl Guides and cheerlead. My favourite thing to do is spend time with my family.
Now that you know a little about me, I’d love to learn more about you. Join the Purple Day Forums and tell us about yourself! And remember - wear purple on March 26 to support epilepsy awareness! Read more..

Happy First Day Of Spring!

Well, "OFFICIAL" first day but not if you looked out the window...it still looks like winter. I must with much glee that it IS actually starting to feel like spring is in the air. I sure hope it stays this way and we don't get a nasty storm in April or even May as "Winterpeg" has been known to get. The temps have been mild and the bone chilling windchill gone allowing for the snow to start melting. Now whenever you drive on the road, you are seeing potholes everywhere (kinda like driving thru a minefield) and must avoid all the growing puddles. (Sure glad I don't have to walk the kids to school every day now or we'd be splashed/soaked daily. To mark this first day of spring the kids are looking forward to getting their bikes out today and riding them on the driveways atleast if not the road in front of our house. There is grass visible in places but unfortunately all my flower gardens are still covered in a nice white layer so no spring flowers (ie crocuses) yet. However it DOES look promising for an Easter egg hunt outside this year (unlike last year!).
HAPPY SPRING! It's been a long winter and hopefulley we can soon bid winter a farewell until next year. :D

If you got here via Mr Linky, WELCOME! and let me introduce myself: I started blogging just over a year and a half ago. I didn't think I'd like it or have anything to blog about. Little did I know how addicting it would be. Rather than advertising anything or a way of sharing info, I guess it is more a place to share about me, myself, and my life and hopefully meet some new friends. I'm a part-time registered nurse and full-time mother to three beautiful redheads. My DH is also a full-time nurse and we've been married for eight years since we met in University. I enjoy gardening, scrapbooking and crafts of various kinds. I'm looking forward to meeting some other mothers of young children with whom I can share the experiences of motherhood and marriage and our love for the Lord. You can read more about me here on my site. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. I have never considered myself much of a speaker. Leave me a comment letting me know you stopped by so I can come visit you too!
